TEDxTableMountain sprang from a series of discussions between four women in 2011. We explored the concept of “sustainable relationships”, how relationships with ourselves and each other are mirrored in our approach to the rest of life on Earth. Two TEDx events emerged from these discussions in 2012: TEDxTableMountain – Creative Perspectives on the Human Nature Relationship, and TEDxPrinceAlbert – Meet me there: Working Beneath, Between and Beyond towards a thriving planet.
Continuing the journey, TEDxTableMountain held a one-day conference on 16 November 2013, along the theme: EXPLORING THE EDGE.
Exploring The Edge:
Limits, boundaries, peripheries, and the enigmatic attraction to them is part of the human condition. Discovering “the other” as a revelatory process is fundamental to understanding “ourselves”. When we define the “Edge”, we are defining difference – allowing ourselves to see each other in a comparative light. It is this ability to categorize, to separate ourselves along tribal and physical lines that has bounded us, divided us, and inked the history of the world with its permutations. When we find the “Edge” therefore, we find ourselves… our abilities, our affiliations, and our fears. It is also from the edge that we make our leaps into infinite possibilities, and break through boundaries and limitations. Here we find the opportunity to create new blends and commonality.
Journeys of Excellence:
In 2015, the TEDxTableMountain team created “Journeys of Excellence”, an evening event that took place on 25 May at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.
The event was hosted on Africa Day, as a showcase for excellence in research and practice, drawing from fields as wide as health, sciences, arts, education and disabilities. We aimed to create a platform for dedicated, passionate and bright Africans working to solve our continent’s problems.
Africa leaps from 0 to 100 in an instant and the results are more often than not revolutionary. We attract forces both positive and negative, and in the face of adversity, Africans are known to be instrumental in using whatever resources available to make breakthroughs that captivate attention, resources and collaborative opportunities to improve situations.
In celebration of the Continent in all its diversity, complexity and beauty, the organising team of TEDxTableMountain hosted an evening conference of inspirational ideas worth spreading, themed: Dynamic Leaps. The event was hosted again on Africa Day, 25 May 2016, at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.
TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.
TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
